reno6User, Nov 11, 2021Fully agree. Some form of ARM-based processor in a laptop and lightweight Linux running on … moreGood luck telling this to schools in my country. There is hardly any adoption of Linux as the main desktop operating system.
PocoFairRedmi, Nov 10, 2021Wouldn’t it be great if the students came back to school with Linux installed on these things … moreLol, that won’t happen. I remembered my school here in my country temporarily switching from Windows to Linux and it’s a complete nightmare. There is much more maintenance to be done with offices and LibreOffice is not capable enough to be a worthy replacement for Microsoft Office Word and Office PowerPoint. Everything returned to normal when we recovered Windows. But that said, my school embodies some Linux learning through Raspberry Pi.

PocoFairRedmi, Nov 10, 2021Wouldn’t it be great if the students came back to school with Linux installed on these things … moreFully agree. Some form of ARM-based processor in a laptop and a lightweight Linux running on it. Linux is good for personal use, education, servers, IoT, etc.
And when are these ARM-based laptops coming? I look forward to those processors that could run some form of Windows (light or full) or support any Linux operating system. Intel, AMD, Windows, please listen.
… Nokia has teamed up with Windows for a lightweight operating system, Nokia is dead. Small tablet makers have tried Windows RT and haven’t even made it onto the market. Get inspired by Microsoft. The cost of the operating system counts in the budget category of bare bones
Linux, though too far away, is catching up slowly and steadily. Chrome OS (no matter what the public thinks) is an example of a heavily customized Linux operating system. Microsoft has already shifted its business model from selling products to one based on services and subscriptions. Now would be a good time for them to launch their free Linux-based operating system with all Microsoft services built in (just like Google’s Android) with support for Android apps and default Windows apps. The transition to the digital age cannot be denied. If they want Windows to be alive in the future, that’s it. Otherwise, Mac and Chrome operating systems will shut down Windows.

Hope Microsoft will come with this

Windows 10 S once again.
People expect every Microsoft product to be a full window, so no matter what they try, they will fail.
Windows RT, Windows S, and the like are clear examples of what’s wrong.
Just upgrade Windows for ARM processors and build your own chipset.
With very few people interested in using Linux, it certainly looks like a worthy Chromebook competitor. I see tons of Chromebooks with similar specs to Surface Laptop SE with a much higher price tag.
The only reason to use Windows is for applications that are not available on other platforms. Take that off and there’s only one price tag left.

I have a Chromebook, this is real rubbish. I have a decent one too. The software is pretty crappy and honestly isn’t well built. Apps for Google Office are just a Chrome tab. It is not a legitimate built-in app.
“I haven’t seen any of these Surface SE devices in person yet, but every time Microsoft has tried Windows with low specs, it’s been one horrible thing at times.”
They have just been released, they are supposed to be optimized for low end specs unlike regular windows. This should be more suitable for Chromebook replacements.
“We’ll have to see if these can replace Chromebooks in education based on sales numbers.”
You’re right, we just have to see.

Hemedans, Nov 10, 2021the thing is why buy Chromebook at all? with a Windows laptop you can install any operating system, … moreI’ve had either Chromebook since 2014. I’ve had it at a time when netbooks were already dead, but any decent 11 “or 13.3” Windows laptop was still pretty expensive. When using a Chromebook, you realize that despite all of its limitations, there are a lot of really handy things out there. But yes, I agree, you can run a Linux distro on a Windows laptop.

MS Office is way superior to Google’s version, and it would be a much better option to use in schools.

Chromebook is only popular in North America, other parts of the world don’t even care.
