LG recognizes VRR issues with OLED TVs

LG’s OLED TVs have gone further than any of their rivals over the past two years to accommodate current and next-gen gamers. Key features like support for variable refresh rates, Nvidia G-Sync, automatic switching to low latency mode, and 4K resolution graphics at frame rates up to 120Hz are in order. of the day since 2019.

However, even the best intentions don’t always turn out perfectly. This is how game owners of LG’s 2019 and 2020 OLED TVs became aware of a few issues with implementing variable refresh rate on their TVs.

The biggest issue, and one that affects both the 2019 and 2020 LG OLED sets, is that when VRR is turned on, the image experiences a change in brightness / gamma which makes dark areas in games look grayer and more washed out than it does. ‘with VRR disabled. . I saw this for myself recently on an LG OLED48CX.

So, for example, to activate and deactivate the AMD Freesync function in the menus of LG OLED TVs with the Gears 5 Reading the HDR calibration screen shows that with the VRR function enabled, the black ground is raised and as a result there is less shading detail visible in the dark areas on the left side of the Gears 5 calibration image.

The problem is especially noticeable if you turn off the TV’s Instant Game Response feature and switch to a picture preset other than Game (Standard probably reveals the gamma shift most clearly).

The other issue some are reporting – and captured on video – is noticeable jitter / flickering in some dark gaming image areas when using VRR modes on LG’s 2019 OLEDs.

I sent examples of these issues back to LG some time ago, and they came back to me with what can probably best be described as good news and bad news.

The good news is that LG now officially recognizes that the issues exist, having apparently been able to replicate them in their own labs thanks to the efforts of various people who sent me videos, photos and clear examples of where the problems occur that I could pass to engineers at LG. And now that these engineers recognize that the problems exist, they have actively embarked on the search for a solution.

The bad news is that their initial investigations show that finding a solution will not be straightforward and therefore could take some time.

LG has promised to let me know when it has something positive to report. But in the meantime, he gave me this official statement to share:

“LG Electronics is aware that there may be situations where the luminance changes in dark scenes with game content in VRR mode. The changes may appear more noticeable than on LCD devices, as the OLED black is fundamentally deeper, making the observed brightness differences for the eyes in the low gray area more prominent. As one of the early adopters of VRR in the TV market, despite the challenges of implementing advanced gaming features in current panel technology, we always seek to best integrate new technologies and to improve the experience of our customers.
