Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 21 (IANS): Kerala is gearing up to celebrate Software Freedom Day on September 25 by simultaneously holding technical courses based on FOSS (free software) in each of the 14 districts.
The program will be a joint venture of Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) of the Department of General Education and the Democratic Alliance for Freedom of Knowledge (DAKF).
The KITE-Victers channel was the backbone during the pandemic period when for two years they ran the offline and online classroom sessions that provided major relief to public schools.
K.Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE, said on September 25 that each of the 14 districts will respond to a different FOSS theme for the class.
“On this day, FOSS-based training programs will be conducted in all 14 KITE District Offices. It will be a unique achievement that each of the 14 KITE District Offices hosts different themes for the training programs,” said said Sadath.
The different themes include Kasaragod (Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia), Kannur (Scribus- DTP), Wayanad (OpenStreetMap), Kozhikode (ExpEyes- Open hardware), Malappuram ( GNUKhata- Accounting), Palakkad ( GeoGebra and Maths), Thrissur (Kdenlive- Video Editing), Ernakulam (Scratch – Visual Programming), Idukki (Opentoonz -Animation), Kottayam (IoT and Robotics), Alappuzha (App Inventor – Mobile Application Development), Pathanamthitta (Blender – 3D Animation), Kollam (Python – Programming), Thiruvananthapuram (Krita-Graphics).
“Those who wish to participate in the training programs at KITE District Offices can register freely from today on the website Akite.kerala.gv.in/SFDay2022. The public can also view all 14 classes on the portal, which was inaugurated by Minister of Education V. Sivankutty at the KITE Victers studio, here on Wednesday,” Sadath added.
Besides, there will be public awareness programs also on Free Software in all KITE district offices on the same day.
As part of this, Install Fests would also be held in all districts, where the latest version of KITE GNU Linux 20.04 would be freely installed for the public.
As a prelude to the Software Freedom Day celebrations, specific training programs based on free software will be broadcast on the KITE Victers channel from September 22 to 24.
