A multitude of new USB-C accessories on display at CES 2022 indicate that the 7-year-old data and charging technology is on the verge of reaching its potential.

Usb-c and its related standards are now incorporated into laptops, Android phones and countless accessories. USB-C debuted on 2015 Apple MacBooks and Google Chromebooks. Its oval connector replaced rectangular USB-A ports on PCs and smaller trapezoidal USB Micro-B ports on many Android phones.

The crop of new products at CES shows the growing adoption of USB-C. With one major exception, everything from cars and headphones to game controllers and multi-device chargers comes with a USB-C connection. (Were still hoping it will happen on Apple iPhones.)

Deeper changes are coming with the standards that govern what cables and USB ports can do. the upgrade from USB 3 to USB 4which is now coming to laptops and other devices, means faster data transfer and docking stations with multiple USB-C ports. the USB PD (Power Delivery) standard can handle more and more charging needs, now including high-end gaming laptops.

Here’s a look at some of the new USB-C devices from CES 2022. Where products are not yet available for sale, we’ve linked to the product information on the manufacturer’s website.

The $ 189 plug-in USB4-HUB3A USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 hub avoids the variety on many hubs and docking stations to focus only on USB and Thunderbolt, Intel’s closely related connector technology on which USB 4 is based. A USB-C or Thunderbolt connection on your laptop becomes three on this hub. In addition, there is a USB-A port for your keyboard, thumb drive or other accessory that is not part of the modern era. It comes with its own external charger, which means the USB-C / Thunderbolt ports can deliver up to 15W of power to whatever is plugged in, which is useful for external drives and some other accessories.

Hyper’s 4-port Thunderbolt hub handles both power and data functions using USB-C or Thunderbolt. One port connects to a laptop, providing up to 96 watts of power – enough for almost any high-end laptop. Three more ports connect to other devices and provide up to 15W of power. Unusually, the Hyper hub has built-in power electronics, so all you need to power it is a cable, not the usual combination of cable and power supply. Hyper did not disclose pricing or availability.

Satechi’s $ 120 4-Port USB-C Charger can generate up to 165W of power, a usefully high rating for handling a beefy laptop and a few other devices like tablets and phones. For years, USB-C chargers have also had USB-A ports, but since new iPhones come with a Lightning-USB-C cable and millions of other smartphones are fully USB-C, having 4 ports USB-C is more useful for the future. This Satechi charger uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) power electronics for a more compact size.

EZQuest’s $ 80 USB-C Gen 2 Hub Adapter features three 10Gbps USB-C ports and one 5Gbps USB-C port that can also transmit up to 100W of power if you plug in your laptop charger into its pass-through port. It connects to your PC with a built-in 9 inch cable. It also has three USB-A ports on the other side. Although it is compact, none of the USB ports support video.

Targus, well known for laptop bags, announced a $ 443 USB-C docking station that also has a built-in fingerprint reader for authentication. This can be handy as biometric login is becoming more prevalent, even replacing passwords in some situations. This docking station can also provide up to 100W for powering a laptop, has a single USB-C port and 4 USB-A ports for other peripherals, supports two 4K monitors and comes with plugs for 3.5mm audio cables and RJ-45 Ethernet. It is scheduled to be shipped this month.

If you’d rather have useful ports instead of the sleek faceplate of Apple’s new iMacs, the $ 200 Hyperdrive hub is worth checking out. It’s a 360-degree swivel that fits neatly under the base of the iMac and offers a wealth of ports: one USB-C, four USB-A, one SD card slot, one HDMI port, and one M port. .2 phat for fast and beefy NVMe SSDs (solid state drives) that you can plug in and unplug as easily as a flash card for extra storage capacity.

The Anker 535 Portable Power Station at $ 499 is a big battery – 512 Wh, about 10 times the capacity of a MacBook Pro. It has a 60W USB-C charging port, three USB-A ports, a 12V car charging port, and four conventional AC outlets for devices like the CPAP machines you will want to continue operating even in the event of a power failure. (If you are charging devices such as laptops or phones, however, avoid using AC outlets, as you will only waste power as it will be converted from the DC power of the battery to the AC power of the battery. DC plug and return of your device.) This is also got a light bar for emergencies.

The EZQuest 100W UltimatePower 120W USB-C Charger can charge a beefy MacBook Pro or two smaller laptops that consume 60W each. GaN electronics and folding pins make it compact – smaller than a credit card in height and width, although of course it is much thicker. In addition to the USB-C ports, it has a USB-A port for older devices. It comes with a 2 meter USB-C cable and adapter for use in European countries. The shipping date has not yet been announced.
