Amazon Prime Days are upon us and there is a lot to offer. We’ll be sharing more of these deals by the end of the event, but Amazon isn’t the only game in town. Typically, many retailers roll out their own promotions to participate in the Prime Day hype. From Walmart to Target and many stores in between, Chromebook deals can be found outside of Amazon.com and some of them are exclusive to these “other” retailers, making them worth checking out before you go. buy. This deal happens to be one of those devices from one of “those” other retailers.

Just in case you missed it, HP quietly rolled out a consumer version of the Chromebook Elite c1030 a few months ago and gave it exclusively to Best Buy for sale. Aside from a few minor printing errors on the list, the “new” HP Chromebook is exactly what we expected and is, in fact, identical to the business-focused Elite c1030. The big difference is that the Best Buy model costs just under $ 1,000, which makes it significantly lower than the Enterprise version. Watch Robby’s video for a preview of the consumer version listed simply as the HP Chromebook x360 13c.

At $ 949, the HP is probably more than many buyers are willing to chew, and that’s completely understandable. That’s not to say the HP isn’t worth the money, but a thousand dollars is a lot for any device and Chromebooks still earn their proverbial stripes in the eyes of consumers who will deserve those kinds of awards. That said, you’re slashing the price of the HP by $ 200, and now we’re talking good value for money and a major value proposition. Right now, Best Buy has done just that, and you can pick up the ultra-premium HP for just $ 749. Here’s a look at what the HP Chromebook x360 13c has to offer.

How to take a screenshot on a Chromebook https://greguti.com/how-to-take-a-screenshot-on-a-chromebook/ https://greguti.com/how-to-take-a-screenshot-on-a-chromebook/#respond Sun, 20 Jun 2021 18:00:00 +0000 https://greguti.com/how-to-take-a-screenshot-on-a-chromebook/

Taking a screenshot is often useful at work or just to show a friend something that you find interesting on social media. If you’re using one of the best Chromebooks as your everyday machine, you’re definitely going to need to take a quick screenshot at some point. The good news is that taking a screenshot on Chrome OS is as easy as it is on your Mac or PC. Let’s take a quick look at how to take a screenshot and edit or annotate the result.

Take a screenshot on a Chromebook

If you want to take a screenshot of your entire screen on a Chromebook, tap Ctrl + Show Windows button (Ctrl + F5 on a Windows keyboard). The Show Windows key, which looks like a rectangle with two lines on the right side, is on the top row of the keyboard (it’s in the same position as F5 on a Windows machine).

It should be noted that all screenshots taken on Chrome OS can be found in the Downloads folder. It’s a little different from the default storage values on a Mac or PC. You can quickly find the Downloads folder by going to the Files app in your launcher. It is also quite easy to add additional folders for the organization.

pop-up box for screenshots on Chrome OS

To capture a partial screenshot, tap Shift + Ctrl + Show windows (Shift + Ctrl + F5 on a Windows keyboard), then click and drag your cursor over the exact area you want to capture. A cross icon will appear; click and drag it until the part of the screen you want to copy is highlighted, then release. Depending on the version of Chrome OS, you may see a quick pop-up window with the screenshot preview in the lower right corner of your desktop. In the pop-up window, you can choose to copy the screenshot to the clipboard or start annotating the image.

If you have a tablet or Chrome OS device running in tablet mode, you won’t have direct keyboard access. Taking a screenshot is still possible, just using a different method. Simultaneously press the following physical buttons: Power + Low volume. With a stylus, you can also select part of the screen to capture in tablet mode.

Editing a screenshot

Google has a nice built-in annotation tool for editing screenshots in Chrome OS, which you can access in several ways. First, you can press the Edit option in the initial pop-up box. If you decide to change your image later, you can go to the Downloads folder and select the image.

native screenshot editing tool on Chrome OS

Syncing screenshots between devices is also easy. You can use Google keep as an annotation tool to achieve this. For those who need a more robust and powerful assembly, be sure to check out Chrome canvas.

Google Keep to edit screenshots.

You are now ready to start taking screenshots on your Chromebook or Chromebox. If you work with screenshots all the time for work like we do, you might also want to consider a docking station for your Chromebook. This gives you the added flexibility of working from a larger monitor. Keep in mind that you can also use Android apps on Chrome OS, so you can also capture your favorite social media posts.

This week we have a wide array of reviews covering everything from gaming laptops to unique synths. First off, let’s talk about headphones – Billy Steele spent time with Beats’ new Studio Buds and found them to be comfortable, Android compatible, and reasonably priced. Then Devindra Hardawar put the ASUS ROG Strix G15 advantage to the test, ray tracing and all, to see how a machine with both an AMD processor and graphics stacks up against the competition. Nathan Ingraham used Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 to see if the 360-degree, 3: 2 display could convince him, and Terrence O’Brien had fun exploring the unique Make Noise Strega synth and passed a few hands. – on time with the long awaited Elektron electric handle.

Billy Steele / Engadget

Although the new Beats Studio Buds have a new design, active noise cancellation (ANC), extended Android support and solid sound quality. But Billy Steele says one of the most important features is the affordability of $ 150. The new design looks more like a traditional earbud shape in an IPX4 water resistant housing. Although it is more comfortable to wear, the smooth coating makes them a bit difficult to manage. Android users now have access to Fast Pair for the first time, as well as Find My Device and other features native to iOS.

Billy liked the sound quality of the Studio Buds, finding them to match the rest of the company’s headphones: well tuned with punchy bass, deep, upbeat bass lines, and depth and presence in the instruments. acoustic. And noise cancellation blocked out sounds from a dishwasher, dryer, and white noise machine during testing. However, there are downsides to Studio Buds, namely call quality, which Billy found a bit lackluster. Lots of background noise bled into the call, and he also didn’t like the lack of built-in volume controls and sound customization. There is also no wireless charging. But Billy says considering the features and the price, you won’t be sacrificing too much with this set of true wireless headphones.

Make some noise Strega

Terrence O’Brien / Engadget

Terrence O’Brien calls the Making noise Strega synth a “strange beast”. Indeed, the unusual instrument features a creative range of golden squares and circles with unique titles such as “activation” and “tonic”. Between that and a manual that claims it’s not important to understand the device, some people may be put off in their attempts to experiment with it. However, Terrence says some skeptics would do well to stick with the “little steel box of weirdness” because it’s an incredible drone machine, lo-fi delay, and capable overdrive.

The Strega gets its character from the combination of a multimode filter and lo-fi delay, and gets its heart from a single oscillator that transforms when you turn the “Tones” knob. Terrence says one of his favorite features is audio input, so it can be used as an effect as well as an instrument. Oh, and the gold shapes on the front aren’t just decorative – they’re contact plates that will give you a tactile way to manipulate your sounds. The whole machine is designed to explore without focusing on technical details. While the price tag of $ 599 is a bit steep for a synth without MIDI, keyboard, or sequencer, Terrence says without hesitation that he’s having a blast and continues to find new ways to play it.

ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage Laptop is a fully AMD gaming platform

ASOS ROG Strix G15 Advantage

Devindra Hardawar / Engadget

Devindra Hardawar was not initially impressed with the ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage: The bling-out gaming machine has a flashy but uninspired design with prominent LEDs and a plastic casing. But the combination of AMD’s Radeon 6800M with a Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and an entry price of $ 1,550 was pretty convincing. In benchmarks, the Strix G15 scored higher than the Zephyrus G15 and hit between 85fps and 105fps without ray tracing. While i was playing Monitor, Devindra was able to achieve between 175 fps and 200 fps with 1080p graphics at maximum and said AMD FreeSync technology maintains smooth frame rates.

However, when it passed ray tracing to medium, the laptop crawled around 45 fps. Additionally, the Strix G15’s fast 300Hz display is not very bright and did not perform well in outdoor environments where colors appeared washed out – it is much more suited to low-light gaming in a room. dark room. It’s also heavier than most competing 15-inch five-pound laptops. Devindra says it’s not the computer he would use to watch movies or create media – it’s clearly a gaming rig and should be used as such. That would be overkill for general productivity work, but any gamer looking for a surprisingly affordable and powerful gaming laptop would be well served.

Acer Chromebook Spin 713

Nathan Ingraham / Engadget

Our Chromebook fan, Nathan Ingraham, has a strong penchant for a 3: 2 display, so he was eager to review the Acer Chromebook Spin 713. With a functional design, the Spin 713 features a sturdy and smooth 360-degree hinge, is two-thirds of an inch thick, and weighs just over 3 pounds. That’s big compared to other Chromebooks, but it gives you plenty of ports (two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, one HDMI, one headphone jack, one USB-A, and a microSD card slot) and a remarkable 13-inch touchscreen. , 5 inches. But Nathan says the display is by far his favorite feature of the laptop. The 2,256 x 1,504 resolution display is bright and crisp, and the increased vertical space on the screen has made many of its daily tasks easier.

While Nathan said the keyboard and trackpad were similar to other Acer Chromebooks, he also quickly pointed out that the Spin 713’s setup was not as premium or solid as the other models. That didn’t stop it from typing quickly and accurately or getting smooth, responsive trackpad performance. However, the 360 Hinge has a trade-off: the placement of the speakers, which are found at the bottom of the laptop in order to make them more accessible in tablet mode. In addition, it was disappointed with the sound quality, and the battery life was also not remarkable – it lasted around eight hours on a single charge, two hours less than Asus’ estimate. .

Elektron electric handle

Terrence O’Brien / Engadget

As a fan of Elektron’s Model line of grooveboxes, Terrence O’Brien was eagerly awaiting the Elektron electric handle for almost two and a half years. Released in May, the Power Handle is a tube that holds AA batteries and connects to the sides of the instrument to serve as both a mobile power source and, finally, a handle. It can also fold under the device to act as a stand, but Terrence said leaving it at a low angle and attempts to adjust it made the surface less stable. The company says the power grip should last between five and seven hours, depending on factors like the brightness of the LCD screen. In Terrence’s tests, he was able to consistently get four to five hours with the LCD screen at a minimum.

He also points out that the power handle requires an inelegant cord, which comes out from one end of the handle and connects to the machine’s five-volt power outlet. On the plus side, a firmware update allows model grooveboxes to display a small battery level indicator when connected to the power grip. Instruments can also register that they are running on battery power and will add a start step to prevent the device from accidentally turning on. Although the Power Handle was a better solution than what Terrence was using, he still wondered what had taken so long and why there wasn’t a more cost effective option available earlier.

Can you upgrade the SSD on a Chromebook? https://greguti.com/can-you-upgrade-the-ssd-on-a-chromebook/ https://greguti.com/can-you-upgrade-the-ssd-on-a-chromebook/#respond Fri, 18 Jun 2021 15:04:16 +0000 https://greguti.com/can-you-upgrade-the-ssd-on-a-chromebook/

Earlier this week, I shared thoughts on how my Chromebook could get me through a master’s program in computer science. With a Core i5 and 16GB of memory, my Acer Chromebook Spin 13 has a lot of power, but not enough storage to work with large data sets. It got me thinking of a question I get repeatedly here: can you upgrade the SSD on a Chromebook?

A drive contacted me to suggest that I upgrade the measly 128GB SSD to an M.2 drive. And in theory, that sounds good.

But, the only Chromebooks that support such an SSD storage upgrade should already use the M.2 hardware specification. And I don’t see any mention of M.2 on my Chromebook specs. You will of course have to check your own model.

To be sure, however, I opened up my Acer Chromebook Spin 13.

It was actually quite easy as I have a good set of pilots (the $ 35 iFixit Mako) and I have experience in building computers. I’m not suggesting that you should follow this example; you don’t want to break your material and if you do, I’m not responsible!

Note that you need to remove the battery cable from any Chromebook to which you have internal access. And don’t leave a power cord plugged in.

After removing all the screws from the rear chassis, I used a thin plastic reward card to gently pry off the keyboard chassis.

With the chassis and keyboard detached, I can now see the motherboard and components inside the Acer Chromebook Spin 13.

And right away I see that there is no M.2 interface to plug in a bigger and faster SSD. I can actually see the storage soldered onto the board as shown below as well as the four RAM chips soldered in the middle.

So the technical sheet didn’t lie. There is no M.2 interface in the Acer Chromebook Spin 13.

The only thing I could actually replace is the battery, which is a simple pull on a cable to pull out because the battery isn’t stuck. My battery is good, so I buttoned up the Chromebook in a few minutes.

Now every model of Chromebook is different. Some newer devices, such as the Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (the successor to my device) use M.2 for storage. Indeed, a Redditor traded for a 1TB M.2 SSD in its Spin 713 last year.

Here’s a photo of her open Chromebook showing the M.2 slot my laptop doesn’t have. I annotated the image so that you can see the new SSD card and the M.2 interface where it is installed.

upgrade SSD on a Chromebook

Once he replaced the storage, he had to install Chrome OS on the SSD, which is done using downloadable Chrome OS recovery images. These are the images provided by Google in case your software has ever gone wrong. Once Chrome OS is on the new drive, it simply boots up and has access to the largest amount of storage.

Most of the time, you’ll find scalable storage options on relatively newer, more expensive Chromebooks. Don’t expect to find one in your Celeron or Pentium Chromebook, for example. And if you own a high-end Chromebook from over 2 years ago like me, you probably won’t be lucky too.

In that case, you can still do what I originally planned to do: connect a high capacity SSD over USB-C or get a large microSD card, even if it’s not as fast as a “real one.” »SSD drive.

Windows 11 SE leak reveals latest Chromebook competitor https://greguti.com/windows-11-se-leak-reveals-latest-chromebook-competitor/ https://greguti.com/windows-11-se-leak-reveals-latest-chromebook-competitor/#respond Wed, 16 Jun 2021 21:33:55 +0000 https://greguti.com/windows-11-se-leak-reveals-latest-chromebook-competitor/

It looks like Microsoft may be working on a lite version of its next-gen Windows 11 operating system called Windows 11 SE. The operating system is believed to be the direct successor to Windows 10 S, which was eventually renamed Windows 10 in S mode, an operating system Microsoft developed for use in the home and home markets. education and is designed for long battery life and sustained performance. Windows 11 SE might be marketed as a competitor to Chromebooks in its early days and, like its predecessor, might not allow installation of apps outside of the Microsoft Store.

Windows 11 SE screenshots and details were posted by a Twitter user @ fakirmediation. In a tweet, the Twitter user suggested that the platform is the successor to Windows 10 Cloud Edition and that the first version requires an online account to log in because “offline account creation is interrupted in OOBE” .

You will be able to convert your online account to a local account after logging in, but the first version does not yet support multiple users. At the moment, the Microsoft online store appears to be blocked, but the Win32 applications appear to be running. Widgets, however, don’t work on this version, @fakirmeditation wrote in a number of subsequent tweets.

Windows 11 SE screenshot posted by Twitter user @fakirmeditation

Like the leaks for the upcoming but unannounced Windows 11 update, the desktop version of Windows 11 SE was displayed with a centered taskbar and redesigned Start menu, unlike the left-justified Start menu on current versions. Windows 10.

According to reporter Mary Jo Foley, the version posted by @fakirmeditation appears to be the S Mode SKU for Windows 11. WMPowerUser noted that Windows 11 SE could be the successor to Windows 10 Cloud Edition, which Foley clarified on Twitter was just the code name for Windows 10 in S mode.

In a suite Tweeter, Foley claimed that she had not heard any information about Microsoft wanting to get rid of S mode. It is not known then if Microsoft will eventually release this variant of Windows 11 as Windows 11 SE, as the screenshots show. screen, or if it will use a nickname from Windows 11 in S mode instead.

When Microsoft initially released Windows 10 S, it promoted features like fast boot time, the same base code as Windows 10 in a lightweight package, and lower hardware requirements that could make laptops and PCs cheaper. . Traditionally, Windows 10 PCs could also be upgraded to the Windows 10 S platform if owners wanted. Microsoft had designed its S Mode platform as a way to fight the rise of Chrome OS and Chromebooks in the education segment.

The company has an event scheduled for June 24, and we’ll likely know more about the future of Windows then.

Mark this Refurbished Acer Chromebook Spin 713 with a 2 Year Warranty for $ 423 https://greguti.com/mark-this-refurbished-acer-chromebook-spin-713-with-a-2-year-warranty-for-423/ https://greguti.com/mark-this-refurbished-acer-chromebook-spin-713-with-a-2-year-warranty-for-423/#respond Tue, 15 Jun 2021 19:59:01 +0000 https://greguti.com/mark-this-refurbished-acer-chromebook-spin-713-with-a-2-year-warranty-for-423/

If you’re looking for a really good deal on a premium Chromebook, you might want to consider taking a ride on eBay. While the large online mall can often seem a little intimidating and some sellers are questionable, getting a certified refurbished laptop from eBay actually brings a piece of mind you won’t find with many devices, even new. Certified electronics from approved eBay sellers are backed by a 2 year warranty backed by AllState that protects your new device against issues such as screen failures, battery / charger failures, Wi-Fi failures and hard drive / USB port failures.

As it turns out, this certified warranty covers a plethora of devices available direct from Acer’s eBay store, and right now you can buy a 10th Gen Chromebook Spin 713 Core i5 for a low price and enjoy that extra year of protection. . It just so happens to be our Chromebook of the Year 2020 and a year later it’s still one of the best devices out there. As Tiger Lake’s Chromebooks begin to release and bring a new level of power to the Chrome OS segment, the current 10th gen processors are more than powerful enough for most users and the Acer Spin 713 will continue to receive updates until June of 2028 which guarantees a secure and fast experience for years to come.

Priced at $ 629, Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 can frequently be found on sale at Best Buy for $ 529 and on rare occasions you’ll even find the 13.5-inch convertible for $ 200 off. If you’ve scored a new one for $ 429, well done, but I would rate this offer on eBay as good, if not better. For a limited time, you can pick up a Certified Refurbished Acer Chromebook Spin 713 for $ 479.99 and get an additional 12% off anything on the Acer recertified eBay storefront. That brings the total price down to $ 422.39 before taxes and you get that 2 year warranty as the icing on the cake. It’s a good deal if you ask me. Find out on the link below.

Chromebooks are great for people who work on the web a lot because they’re cheap and super easy to use. But like with other computers, there are times when you need to print something on paper.

Fortunately, it’s easy to connect a printer to your Chromebook, either over the network or directly via USB.

Setting up a network printer

Many home and business Wi-Fi networks are configured to use a central printer for all of their printing needs. On a Chromebook, it’s easy to connect to any network printer you use.

Open the Chromebook Settings menu and click on the Devices button. Scroll to Print and scan and select Printers.

Under the Add printers to your profile section, your Chromebook should detect all network printers you can connect to. Click it Save next to the printer you want to use and you can now use printing using standard printing functions.

Chromebook add printer menu

If your printer does not appear, verify that it is turned on and connected to the network. You can also try turning your Wi-Fi off and on again. You may need to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to add your printer to your network. You can also manually add your printer’s network address.

If that doesn’t work, try updating your printer’s firmware if possible, and make sure you’re using the latest version of Chrome OS.

If all else fails, you may need to contact customer service from your printer manufacturer.

Connecting a USB printer

Connecting a USB printer is very similar to connecting a network printer. Plug your printer into your Chromebook and go to the print menu. Your Chromebook should automatically detect this and allow you to add this printer the same way you would a network printer.

If that doesn’t work, make sure your printer is turned on and the USB cable is connected.

“Printing” on Google Drive

Chromebook Print to Google Drive

Chromebooks previously used Google Cloud Print for printing, but Google phased out Cloud Print in 2020 in favor of direct connections to wired and network printers.

One cool feature of Cloud Print was the ability to “print” a PDF copy of a web page to Google Drive using the standard print function. Google replaced this feature with a Chrome extension that does the same. It is called, and rightly so, Save to Google Drive.

Just install it through the Chrome Web Store and make sure to activate it. You can either save a PNG of the page by clicking the button, or choose to save a PDF locally as well as on Google Drive.

To save a PDF, select Save to Google Drive from the printer drop-down menu when printing a page. Then choose where you want to save this PDF on your Google Drive.

Printing from your Chromebook

Now that you’ve connected your printer, directly or over the network, how do you print? As with everything else on the Chromebook, it’s very simple.

To print a web page, just click on the three dot menu and click To print from the drop-down menu. You can also use the Ctrl + P keyboard shortcut. In Google Docs, you can also print using the File> Print option. From there you will be able to select your printer and its properties.

If that doesn’t work, make sure your printer is turned on and configured through the menu options for direct or network printing, as mentioned earlier. Also check if your printer is loaded with paper, check ink or toner levels, and add more if needed.

Otherwise, Chrome OS may simply be incompatible with your printer. While Chrome OS seems to have a long list of printer drivers, some will inevitably fall through the cracks, especially if you have an older model that your manufacturer may no longer support. If you’re in the market for a new printer, make sure it’s compatible with Chrome OS. Google maintains a directory of printer manufacturers that support Chromebooks.

You can now print from your Chromebook

You can print whatever you need from your Chromebook, making it as comprehensive as any other computing platform. If you’ve used an Android device, Chrome OS will look a lot more familiar to you.

Thinking of getting a Chromebook, but not sure if Chrome OS is right for you? The best way to make a choice is to try the operating system yourself, as you will get in-depth information about the system and how it works.

They include AMD Radeon graphics, powering the 15.6-inch 1920 x 10800 Full HD touchscreen. It’s a 60Hz IPS panel, with an anti-reflective coating and 6.19mm side bezels. There’s 45% NTSC color coverage, according to ASUS, and a 360-degree hinge that not only supports tablet and tent orientations, but elevates the keyboard to more traditional positions for better flow. of work and a more comfortable typing.

Inside, there’s up to 8GB of 3200MHz DDR4x memory and up to 64GB of eMMC storage or up to 128GB of M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD storage. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0 are standard, as are dual Harman Kardon certified speakers and a matrix microphone. An HD webcam sits above the screen, and Google’s Titan C security chip is also included.

For wired connectivity, there is a pair of USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports and a UDB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A. ASUS has also found room for a full-size HDMI 1.4, a microSD card reader, and a combo audio jack.

As for battery life, ASUS says you should see up to 10 hours with the 57 Wh polymer battery. The whole thing measures 357.6 x 240.8 x 18.5mm and weighs 4.17 pounds. It is also rated MIL-STD 810H for resilience.

We’ve seen an increase in the styling of Chromebooks in recent years, and the Chromebook Flip CM5 is there as well. There is a mineral gray aluminum alloy cover, which opens to reveal an all-black interior. The keyboard is full-sized and backlit, with a 1.4mm key travel, while the palm rest apparently has an “Obsidian Velvet” texture for added comfort. The trackpad in its center, meanwhile, measures 5.68 inches and is covered in glass, with palm rejection technology and multitouch gestures.

What stands out most, however, is the splash of color on some keys. The orange highlights of the WASD cluster are designed to make gamers feel more comfortable, although of course you can also pair a wireless gamepad for use with Stadia or NVIDIA GeForce NOW.

the ASUS Chromebook Flip CM5 is available to order now, priced from $ 499.99 with the Ryzen 3 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
