What’s the difference between a Chromebook and a regular laptop?

The only real difference between the two is the type of operating system it runs. A Chromebook uses ChromeOS, developed by Google, while most other laptops run Windows or macOS, although some models are capable of running Linux. Chromebooks are also capable of running Windows if you’re willing to do a bit of work yourself, but they’re really at their best when running ChromeOS.

Can you use a Chromebook to play?

That’s a solid “no”. Chromebooks are designed to be used for everyday tasks such as word processing and web browsing. They just don’t have the right components (like a discrete GPU and tons of RAM) to support any kind of gaming. Are there any downsides to using a Chromebook?

The biggest drawback of Chromebooks compared to other types of laptops is their low RAM and low storage capacities. Most cap out at maybe 16GB of RAM (which is soldered in place so you can’t upgrade it yourself) and 128GB of storage. Although many Chromebooks have 32 or 64 GB eMMC storage cards permanently installed, it is possible to find models equipped with a 128 GB SSD; but since their processors aren’t very powerful either, 128GB is about all they can support for storage, so you can’t really upgrade the hard drive yourself either. However, if you’re looking for a laptop that your kids can use for schoolwork or just something to watch Netflix and browse the web, these are a perfectly suitable option.
